A grilled cheese with a French twist
What’s a Monte Cristo? Basically, it’s ham and cheese sandwiched between two pieces of French toast, smothered in egg batter, deep fried, sprinkled with powdered sugar and dipped in jam. It’s where salty meets sweet and savory.
It used to be, you could find this sandwich on most diner menus across America. But for some reason, its popularity has waned. If you’re lucky, you can find a Monte Cristo sandwich available for delivery from Bite Squad!
It’s believed that the Monte Cristo evolved from the French sandwich, the Croque Monsieur, invented around 1910 and traditionally made with ham between two pieces of brioche-like bread, topped with Gruyere and baked. From 1930 to 1960, items like the “French Sandwich” and “French Toasted Ham and Cheese” started appearing in American cookbooks. And thus emerged the Monte Cristo!
In some places of the country, the Monte Cristo is made with turkey instead of ham, is grilled instead of fried, or even has an egg on top. Disneyland made it famous when it put “Le Special de Monte Cristo Sandwich” on the menu at the Blue Bayou restaurant in New Orlean’s Square. Their version boasts turkey, ham and Swiss with berry jam and crème anglaise on the side. Sorry, delivery not available from Disneyland… yet.
